A Different Future: Then and Now

Growing up with haemophilia today is a very different experience to the past.

In this short film, Charlie heads to the park to play football. While he plays, his mum Helen talks with Paul, who also has haemophilia. As they chat, Helen hears just how much as changed since Paul was a child.

It's a story of hope, progress and ambition. Today, with the right treatment and care, children with haemophilia can look forward to a life shaped by their goals, not by their condition.

Watch the film and see why parents are being encouraged to talk to their healthcare teams about what's possible for their children today.

Caring for a Child with Haemophilia

Finding out your child has haemophilia can be overwhelming but you are not alone. Advances in treatment mean that children can live active, fulfilling lives while managing their condition safely.

As a parent or caregiver, you play a vital role in helping your child thrive:

1. Work closely with your healthcare team
Every child's needs are unique. Your healthcare team can help you understand treatment options, guide in recognising and responding to bleeds, and support your child's physical and emotional wellbeing.

2. Encourage safe activity and play
Physical activity is important for healthy growth, muscle strength, and joint protection. Many sports and activities can be enjoyed safely with the right precautions - your healthcare team can help you choose what's right for your child.

3. Support emotional wellbeing
Living with a rare condition can feel isolating for children. Encouraging open conversations, connecting with other families, and involving your child in decisions about their care can help build resilience and confidence.

4. Plan for independence
As your child grows, they will take on more responsibility for managing their haemophilia. Start early by teaching them about their condition, treatment routines and how to speak up for themselves.

If you are caring for a child with haemophilia, talk to your healthcare team about what's possible today.
